DPSA Vacancies: How to Apply for Public Service Jobs in South Africa
The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) is the South African government body responsible for managing the public service workforce. Every week it publishes the Public Service Vacancy Circular (PSVC) — a comprehensive listing of all open positions across national and provincial departments. This guide explains exactly how to navigate www.dpsa.gov.za, download the Z83 form, and submit a compliant application.
About the DPSA and the PSVC
The DPSA (Department of Public Service and Administration) oversees human resources policy for South Africa's national and provincial public service. Its website, www.dpsa.gov.za, is the official and authoritative source for all government job vacancies.
The Public Service Vacancy Circular (PSVC) is published every Friday. It lists all approved vacancies that departments are currently recruiting for. The circular is freely downloadable as a PDF from the DPSA website and is also gazetted in the Government Gazette.
The PSVC is published every Friday. Set a reminder to check www.dpsa.gov.za every Friday morning to catch new vacancies as soon as they are posted.
How to Access the PSVC on dpsa.gov.za
- Go to www.dpsa.gov.za.
- In the top navigation, click 'Vacancies' or look for the 'Public Service Vacancy Circular' link.
- The current week's circular is listed at the top. Each circular is labelled by number and year (e.g., 'Vacancy Circular 22 of 2026').
- Click the circular to open or download the PDF.
- Use Ctrl+F (find) in your PDF reader to search for keywords like your job title, province, or department.
- Previous circulars are archived on the same page — useful if you missed the previous week's posting.

Every vacancy in the PSVC follows a standard format. Here is what each field means:
- Post: The job title and salary level (e.g., 'Administrative Officer, Salary Level 7')
- Ref No.: A unique reference number — you MUST quote this in your application
- Centre: The location where the post is based (province, city, building)
- Requirements: Minimum qualifications, NQF level, years of experience, and any specific skills
- Duties: The main responsibilities of the role
- Enquiries: A contact person you can call for more information about the post
- Applications: Where and how to submit your application (email, post, hand delivery)
- Closing Date: The deadline — no late applications are accepted under any circumstances
The 2021 New Z83 form replaced the older version. Using the old form will result in automatic disqualification. Always download fresh from www.dpsa.gov.za to ensure you have the current version.
Downloading and Completing the Z83 Form
The Z83 form (New Z83 — effective from 1 January 2021) is mandatory for all public service applications. It is available at www.dpsa.gov.za under the 'Downloads' or 'Forms' section.
The form consists of several parts: Part A (personal details), Part B (previous employment in the public service), Part C (qualifications), Part D (languages), Part E (declaration), and Part F (signature). All parts must be completed.
- Download the current Z83 form from www.dpsa.gov.za.
- Open the form in Adobe Acrobat Reader — it is a fillable PDF. Alternatively print and complete in black ink using BLOCK LETTERS.
- Complete Part A: full name, ID number, nationality, contact details, residential address.
- Complete Part B: declare any previous employment in the public service and whether you have been dismissed or are subject to disciplinary action.
- Complete Part C: list your highest qualification, the institution, year obtained, and NQF level.
- Complete Part D: list the languages you speak, read, and write.
- Read and understand Part E (declaration) carefully before signing.
- Sign Part F in the space provided — an unsigned form is automatically disqualified.
- Do NOT attach certified copies of qualifications or ID unless specifically instructed — this only happens after shortlisting.
Submitting Your Application
Email Applications
Each vacancy advert specifies the submission method. Most departments now accept email submissions, but some still require hand delivery or postal applications.
- Subject line: 'Application for [Post Title] — Ref No. [Reference Number]'
- Attach the completed Z83 form as a PDF (scanned or electronically completed)
- Attach your CV as a separate PDF
- File sizes: keep each attachment under 5 MB
- Send before 12:00 (noon) on the closing date unless the advert specifies otherwise — many departments cut off at noon
Hand Delivery or Postal Applications
- Place the Z83 and CV in a sealed envelope
- Label the envelope clearly: 'Application for [Post Title] — Ref No. [Reference Number]'
- Ensure it arrives before 12:00 on the closing date
- Get a receipt or acknowledgement if hand-delivering
Keep a log of every application you submit: the post title, reference number, department, closing date, and submission method. This helps you track your applications and follow up if needed.
After You Apply
The DPSA standard is that if you have not been contacted within 3 months of the closing date, your application was unsuccessful. There is no obligation for departments to send rejection letters.
If you are shortlisted, you will be contacted to attend a panel interview. At this stage you will be required to bring: original and certified copies of all qualification certificates, your original ID document, and any other documentation specified by the department.
Tips for a Successful DPSA Application
- Read the minimum requirements carefully — do not apply if you do not meet them, as your application will be rejected at the screening stage
- Tailor your CV to reflect the specific duties and requirements listed in each vacancy advert
- Use the same terminology in your CV that appears in the advert (e.g., if the advert says 'Supply Chain Management', use those exact words)
- Apply early — some departments begin shortlisting before the closing date
- Call the contact person listed in the advert if you have genuine questions about the requirements
- Keep certified copies of your qualifications ready — certificates must be certified within 3 months of the interview
