Types of Disability Grant
Permanent Disability Grant
For disabilities that are permanent or very unlikely to improve. Once approved, this grant does not require annual medical renewal — although SASSA may review it periodically.
Temporary Disability Grant
For disabilities expected to last at least 12 months but that may improve over time. Typically granted for 12–24 months. A new medical assessment is required at renewal. Begin the renewal process at least 3 months before your grant expires.
The Medical Assessment Process
SASSA uses approved doctors at designated assessment sites. The assessment is completely free of charge — you pay nothing.
- Apply at your nearest SASSA office first — bring your ID and any existing medical records
- SASSA refers you to a designated assessment site
- A SASSA-appointed medical officer (district surgeon or contracted doctor) assesses your disability
- The medical officer submits a report directly to SASSA
- SASSA uses the medical report to make a decision on your application
Free assessment: You should never pay for the SASSA Disability Grant medical assessment. If anyone asks you to pay, report this to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.

How Much Is the Disability Grant in 2026?
R2,310 per month. If you also qualify for the Grant-in-Aid (because you need full-time paid care), you may receive an additional R530/month on top of your Disability Grant.
How Long Does Approval Take?
Typically 3 months from the date of application, including the time for the medical assessment. Contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 if you have been waiting more than 3 months.
Renewing a Temporary Disability Grant
You will receive a notification approximately 3 months before your grant expires. Attend a new medical assessment and submit updated medical reports. Apply for renewal at your nearest SASSA office — do not wait until the grant expires, as there can be a gap in payments.
Disability Grant for People With Mental Health Conditions
Psychiatric and psychological conditions — including severe depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and PTSD — may qualify for the Disability Grant if they prevent you from supporting yourself. A psychiatrist's or clinical psychologist's report significantly strengthens your application and medical assessment.
