Grant-by-Grant Details

Social Relief of Distress (SRD) — R370/month

Old Age Pension (Older Persons Grant) — R2,310–R2,330/month

Available to South Africans aged 60 and older who pass the means test. Standard rate is R2,310/month. Those 75 and older receive an additional R20, totalling R2,330/month. Both South African citizens and permanent residents qualify.

See our full guide: Old Age Pension Grant 2026.

Disability Grant — R2,310/month

Available to South Africans aged 18–59 with a permanent or temporary disability that prevents them from supporting themselves. Requires a medical assessment (free of charge). When the recipient turns 60, it converts to an Old Age Pension.

See our full guide: Disability Grant 2026.

Care Dependency Grant — R2,310/month

For caregivers of children under 18 with severe disabilities requiring permanent full-time care. The child must be assessed as needing full-time care. The caregiver, not the child, must pass the means test.

Child Support Grant — R560/month per child

For primary caregivers of children under 18. R560 per child per month. A caregiver looking after multiple children receives the grant for each qualifying child. Both caregiver and child must be South African citizens or permanent residents.

See our full guide: Child Support Grant 2026.

Foster Child Grant — R1,220/month per child

For registered foster parents caring for a child placed with them by court order. The amount is R1,220/month per foster child. This is higher than the Child Support Grant to account for additional costs.

Grant-in-Aid — R530/month

An additional grant for existing SASSA grant recipients who are unable to care for themselves and require full-time paid assistance. This is paid on top of your existing grant, not as a standalone grant.

War Veterans Grant — R2,330/month

For qualifying South African war veterans who are aged 60 or older, or have a disability. The amount is R2,330/month.

Means Test for SASSA Grants (2026)

Most SASSA grants require passing a means test. Your income and assets cannot exceed certain limits:

  • Single person: income less than approximately R112,000/year
  • Married couple: combined income less than approximately R224,000/year
  • SRD grant: requires zero income from any source including UIF, other grants, or employment
