How to Apply for a Smart ID Card 2026
The Smart ID card is South Africa's modern identity document — replacing the old green ID book. It has embedded microchip technology that makes it harder to forge and easier for institutions to verify. If you are 16 or older and a South African citizen, you are entitled to a Smart ID. This guide explains how to book your appointment, what to bring, and when to expect your card.
What Is a Smart ID Card?
The Smart ID card is a credit-card-sized identity document with a microchip containing your photo, fingerprints, and personal information. It is the official South African identity document required for many government services, banking applications, SIM card registration, and travel within SADC countries.
