How to Appeal a Declined SASSA Grant (Step-by-Step)
If SASSA has declined your grant application — whether for the SRD R370 or any other grant — you have the legal right to appeal that decision. This guide explains how to lodge an appeal, what to include, and how long the process takes. Do not give up — many appeals are successful.
Why Was Your Grant Declined?
SASSA verifies all applications against multiple government databases. Common reasons for decline include:
- Income was found linked to your ID via UIF, NSFAS, or SARS
- You are listed as a government employee
- Your ID could not be verified with the Department of Home Affairs
- Banking details could not be confirmed
- You already receive another SASSA grant
- You are a NSFAS beneficiary
- You are listed as deceased (identity fraud — must be resolved at Home Affairs)
- You exceeded the means test income threshold
How to Appeal an SRD R370 Declined Grant
Step 1 — Check Your Decline Reason
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and log in with your ID number and registered phone number. Your status page should show the reason for decline. Note this reason — it is important for your appeal.
Step 2 — Submit Your Appeal Online
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za
- Click “Appeal” or “Submit an Appeal”
- Log in with your ID number and phone number
- Select the month(s) you want to appeal
- Complete the appeal form — explain clearly why you believe the decline was incorrect
- Submit the appeal and note your reference number
Step 3 — Appeal Deadline
Important deadline: You must appeal within 90 days of the decline decision. If you miss the 90-day window, you cannot appeal that month's decision. Act quickly.
Step 4 — Wait for the Decision
The Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) reviews SRD appeals. Decisions typically take 60–90 days. You will be notified via the phone number registered on your account.
How to Appeal Other SASSA Grant Decisions (Non-SRD)
For Old Age Pension, Disability, Child Support, and other grants:
- Visit your nearest SASSA office within 90 days of the decision
- Ask for a “Request for Reconsideration” form (also called SASSA Form 17)
- Complete the form and provide any supporting documents
- Submit to the SASSA official — get a receipt/reference number
- If the reconsideration is still declined, escalate to the SASSA Appeals Tribunal
What to Include in Your Appeal
- Your full name, ID number, and contact details
- The specific month(s) being appealed
- A clear explanation of why you believe the decline was incorrect
- Supporting documents (e.g. bank statement showing no income, employer letter if unemployed, sworn affidavit if needed)
Where to Get Help With Your Appeal
- SASSA toll-free: 0800 60 10 11
- Black Sash (free legal help NGO): 072 663 3739 or blacksash.org.za
- Legal Aid South Africa: 0800 110 110 (toll-free)

What Happens If Your Appeal Is Successful?
If your appeal is upheld, SASSA must pay you the grant amount for the months you were incorrectly declined. This back-payment is called “arrears” and is deposited into your registered bank account — typically within 30 days of the appeal decision.
What If You Miss the 90-Day Appeal Deadline?
You cannot appeal a specific month's decision if you miss the 90-day window. However, you can still check your eligibility and reapply for future months. SASSA reassesses every month, so a change in your circumstances may lead to approval.
