How to Apply to a TVET College in South Africa
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges offer practical, career-focused qualifications that prepare students for the workplace. South Africa has 50 public TVET colleges across 9 provinces. You can apply directly to the college or use the Central Application Hub (CAH) at www.cah.edu.za. TVET colleges offer two main qualification types: the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) and the N-Programmes (N1-N6).
Types of TVET Qualifications
TVET colleges offer two main qualification streams:
| Qualification | Levels | Duration | Typical Admission Requirement |

| National Certificate Vocational (NCV) | Level 2, 3, 4 | 3 years (1 year per level) | Grade 9 (for Level 2) or Grade 11/12 |
| N-Programmes (National Technical Certificate) | N1 to N6 | 6 months per level (18 months per qualification) | Grade 9 or Grade 12 depending on the programme |
| Report 191 (Legacy Engineering) | N1 to N6 | 6 months per level | Grade 9 or Grade 12 depending on level |

Fees and Financial Assistance
TVET college fees are significantly lower than university fees. The government subsidises TVET education, and NSFAS funding is available for qualifying students at public TVET colleges.
To apply for NSFAS for TVET colleges, visit www.nsfas.org.za and apply online. NSFAS covers registration fees, tuition, and accommodation (at residential colleges) for eligible students.
After TVET: Pathways and Career Options
N6 certificate holders who complete 18 months of relevant practical workplace experience can apply for a National Diploma. NCV Level 4 holders meet the admission requirements for some university programmes.
TVET qualifications are registered on the NQF and are recognised by industry. Many TVET graduates enter artisan apprenticeships, learnerships, or direct employment in engineering, construction, business, ICT, and hospitality.
