SASSA Reconsideration: Appealing a Refused or Reduced Grant
If SASSA refuses your grant application or reduces your grant without good reason, you have the right to request a reconsideration. This formal appeal is governed by the Social Assistance Act. This guide covers the process, deadlines, and how to escalate.
When Can You Request a Reconsideration?
- Your new grant application was refused
- Your existing grant was reduced or cancelled
- Your grant was suspended and you believe it was in error
- SASSA did not process your application within 3 months
- Your SRD application was declined and you believe the income check was wrong
Do not miss the 90-day deadline. Submit your request immediately even if you don't yet have all documents.
Deadline: 90 Days
You must request a reconsideration within 90 days of receiving the refusal notice. For the SRD grant, declined months can be reconsidered via srd.sassa.gov.za directly.
How to Request a Reconsideration
- Visit your nearest SASSA office in person
- Request and complete the SASSA Reconsideration Form
- Attach your ID and all supporting documents
- Write a brief letter explaining why the decision was wrong
- Submit and keep the signed copy or reference number
- SASSA must respond within 60 days
Documents to Include
- Copy of the SASSA refusal or cancellation letter
- Your South African ID
- Medical reports (for Disability or Care Dependency grants)
- Proof of income or affidavit confirming no income
- Bank statements for the last 3 months
Escalating to the Minister
If SASSA upholds the refusal, appeal to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days of the reconsideration decision. If the ministerial appeal also fails, you may approach the High Court — at this stage consult Legal Aid South Africa (0800 110 110).
