How to Apply for a Disability Grant in South Africa
The SASSA Disability Grant provides monthly financial assistance to South Africans between the ages of 18 and 59 who have a disability that prevents them from working. The grant amount is R2,315 per month in 2026. Both permanent and temporary disability grants are available.

Eligibility Requirements
- South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
- Aged between 18 and 59 years old
- Medically assessed as having a disability that makes you unable to work for more than six months
- Assets must not exceed R1,227,600 (single) or R2,455,200 (married)
- Income must not exceed R86,280 per year (single) or R172,560 per year (married)
- Not receiving any other social grant
- Not maintained in a state institution
Permanent vs Temporary Disability Grant
A permanent disability grant is awarded when your condition is unlikely to improve. A temporary disability grant is awarded for conditions expected to last between six months and two years.
If you receive a temporary grant, SASSA will require a review assessment before the grant expires. If your condition has not improved, the grant may be extended or converted to a permanent grant.
You do not need to pay anyone to help you apply. SASSA officers assist applicants for free. Beware of scammers who charge fees.
How to Apply
- Visit your nearest SASSA office. No online application is available for this grant.
- Complete the application form (DG1) with the help of a SASSA officer.
- Submit your supporting documents (see list below).
- SASSA will arrange a medical assessment with a government-appointed medical officer.
- SASSA processes your application and notifies you of the outcome.
- If approved, payment begins via bank account, Post Office, or approved retailer.

If your disability improves and you are able to work, you must inform SASSA. Failing to report changes can result in overpayments that must be repaid.
After You Apply
SASSA has 90 days to process your application. You will receive a letter with the outcome. If approved, your first payment may include backdated amounts from the date of application.
If your application is rejected, you have 90 days to appeal the decision. Submit your appeal in writing to SASSA. You can also approach the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals.
