Traffic Fine Checker — How to Find and Pay Traffic Fines
Traffic fines in South Africa are managed by different systems depending on where the offence occurred. Select your municipality below to find out exactly how to check and pay your fines.
Important: AARTO Demerit System
South Africa uses the AARTO demerit system for road traffic offences. Drivers who accumulate 15 or more demerit points within 3 years face licence suspension. Always pay fines promptly to avoid demerit escalation and warrant of arrest.

What Happens If You Do Not Pay?
- ✗Warrant of arrest issued after the compliance period expires (usually 32 days from notice)
- ✗Demerit points applied to your driving licence under AARTO
- ✗Roadworthy certificate and licence disc renewals blocked if you have outstanding fines on your vehicle or ID
- ✗Vehicle licence disc blocked at NATIS — you cannot renew your disc until all fines are paid
- ✗Credit bureau listing possible for major outstanding fines through the AARTO adjudication process
Disputing a Fine — How to Make a Representation
If you believe a fine was issued in error, you have the right to make a representation (dispute). Under AARTO, you have 32 days from the date on the notice to either pay or make a representation.
- 1Go to www.aarto.co.za and log in or create an account.
- 2Select the fine you want to dispute and click "Make Representation".
- 3Upload supporting evidence (e.g. proof you were not the driver, proof the vehicle was sold).
- 4The AARTO appeals board will review your representation and issue a decision within 30 days.
