Vehicle Licence Disc Renewal in South Africa
Every registered motor vehicle in South Africa must display a valid licence disc on the windscreen. The disc is renewed annually. It can be renewed at the post office, municipality, or online via the eNaTIS portal. This guide explains the full process, costs, and what to do if your disc expires.
What Is a Licence Disc?
A vehicle licence disc (also called a motor vehicle licence or MVL) is the annual registration sticker that must be displayed in the bottom left corner of your vehicle's windscreen. It confirms that your vehicle is registered and that the annual licence fee has been paid.
The disc shows the registration number, expiry month and year, and the vehicle make. A vehicle without a valid disc is not permitted on public roads.
Contact your provincial licensing department for the exact fee applicable to your vehicle. Fees are reviewed annually by the provincial government.
Renewal Costs
Licence disc fees are set by each province and are calculated based on the vehicle's tare mass (unladen weight). The heavier the vehicle, the higher the annual fee. The following figures are approximate guides for 2026.
| Tare Mass (kg) | Approximate Annual Fee |
|---|---|
| Under 500 kg | R160 - R250 |
| 500 kg - 1,000 kg | R250 - R450 |
| 1,000 kg - 1,500 kg | R450 - R700 |
| 1,500 kg - 2,000 kg | R700 - R1,000 |
| Over 2,000 kg | R1,000+ |
Where to Renew Your Licence Disc
- Post office: the most convenient option - the South African Post Office is an agent for licence disc renewals nationally
- Municipal licensing department: your local traffic/licensing office
- Online via eNaTIS: www.enatis.com - licence disc renewal is available online for most vehicle types
- AA branches: the Automobile Association facilitates renewals at selected branches
Documents Required for Renewal
- Original South African identity document
- Current vehicle registration certificate
- Valid roadworthy certificate (if required for your vehicle and province)
- Payment of the applicable annual licence fee
You can renew up to 2 months before the disc expires. It is advisable to renew at least 3 to 4 weeks before expiry to allow for postal delivery of the new disc.
How to Renew Online via eNaTIS
- Visit www.enatis.com and navigate to the vehicle licence renewal section.
- Enter your vehicle registration number and identity number.
- Confirm vehicle details and outstanding fee amount.
- Pay online using a credit card or EFT.
- Print the temporary licence confirmation for your windscreen.
- The physical disc is posted to your registered address within 2 to 3 weeks.
An expired licence disc also invalidates your vehicle insurance in many cases. Check your insurance policy and renew your disc before the expiry date.
Expired Licence Disc
Driving with an expired licence disc is a traffic offence and can result in a fine, demerit points under AARTO, and your vehicle being impounded. There is no grace period beyond the expiry date.
If your disc has expired, renew immediately at the post office or municipal licensing office. A temporary paper licence can be issued on the same day while the new disc is printed and posted.
