How to Check Your UIF Claim Status Online and By Phone
Once you have submitted a UIF claim, you can track its progress online via uFiling, by calling the UIF contact centre, by sending a WhatsApp, or by visiting your nearest labour centre. This page explains all available methods and what the different status messages mean.
If you submitted your claim in person at a labour centre and were not registered on uFiling, a labour officer may have linked your claim to a uFiling profile. You can still register on uFiling with the same ID number to access your claim online.
Method 1: Check Via uFiling Online
The uFiling portal at www.ufiling.co.za is the fastest and most convenient way to check your claim status. You can access it 24 hours a day from any device with internet access.
- Go to www.ufiling.co.za
- Log in with your username and password (register first if you have not already done so)
- Click on "My Account" or "Claims" in the navigation menu
- Select "View Claim Status" or the relevant claim from your claim history
- Your current status will be displayed along with any required actions
Method 2: Call the UIF Helpline
You can speak to a UIF agent by calling the toll-free helpline. Have your ID number and UIF reference number ready before you call.
- UIF toll-free number: 080 003 0007
- Operating hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00
- You will be asked for your ID number and case reference number
- The agent can tell you whether your claim is pending, approved, or rejected, and why
Method 3: Visit Your Nearest Labour Centre
If you submitted your claim at a labour centre, you can return in person to check the status. Bring your ID document and any reference numbers you were given when you submitted your claim.
Labour centres are open Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 16:00. Expect long queues, especially on Mondays. Arriving early is strongly recommended.
The WhatsApp service is available 24/7 for basic enquiries including claim status, payment dates, and office locations.
Method 4: WhatsApp
The Department of Employment and Labour has a WhatsApp channel that allows you to check your UIF status without calling or visiting an office.
Send a WhatsApp message to 0800 030 007 to start a conversation with the automated assistant. You will be prompted to provide your ID number to check your claim status.
Understanding Your Claim Status
The UIF system uses several status descriptions. Here is what each one means:
| Status | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Your claim has been received and is being reviewed | Wait. Allow 4-8 weeks for processing |
| Approved | Your claim has been approved. Payment will follow | Ensure your bank details are correct |
| Payment Processed | Payment has been sent to your bank account | Check your bank account within 2-3 business days |
| Rejected | Your claim has been declined | Request reasons in writing. You can appeal within 90 days |
| Documents Outstanding | More documents are needed | Submit the requested documents immediately |
| Suspended | Payments are temporarily stopped | Contact the UIF to find out why and what is needed |
If you have not received a payment on your expected payment date, do not wait. Contact the UIF immediately. Banking errors and system issues can delay payments and must be corrected before your next payment cycle.
When to Follow Up
If your claim has been in a pending status for more than 8 weeks with no update, it is advisable to follow up. This can be done by phone, WhatsApp, or in person.
Always note your reference number, the date you called, and the name of the agent you spoke to. This creates a paper trail if you need to escalate your complaint.
