How to Track Your Smart ID Card Application Status
Once you have submitted your Smart ID card application at Home Affairs or via eHomeAffairs, you can track its progress online, via SMS, or by calling the Home Affairs contact centre. This guide explains every method available in 2026.
Track Your Smart ID Online
The Department of Home Affairs provides an online tracking tool on its website. Visit www.dha.gov.za and navigate to the Track and Trace section to check the status of your application.
You will need your South African ID number and the reference number printed on your application receipt.
- Go to www.dha.gov.za
- Click on "Online Services" in the main menu
- Select "Track and Trace Application Status"
- Enter your 13-digit South African ID number
- Enter your application reference number from your receipt
- Click "Submit" to view your application status
Track via eHomeAffairs
If you applied for your Smart ID card through the eHomeAffairs portal, you can log in to www.ehomeaffairs.gov.za with your registered credentials to view the current status of your application.
The portal shows whether your application is being processed, printed, or ready for collection.
Smart ID cards are ready for collection at the same office or bank branch where you submitted your application. Bring your application receipt and original identity documents when collecting.
SMS Notification System
Home Affairs sends automatic SMS notifications to the cellphone number you provided during your application. You will receive an SMS when your Smart ID card is ready for collection.
Ensure that the cellphone number on your application form is correct. If you did not receive an SMS after 15 working days, use one of the other tracking methods to check your status.
Tracking by Phone
You can call the Home Affairs toll-free contact centre on 0800 60 11 90 (free from a landline, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm) to inquire about your Smart ID status.
Have your South African ID number and application reference number ready when calling.

What the Status Messages Mean
- Application Received: Your application has been captured in the system
- Being Processed: Your application is being verified and printed
- Ready for Collection: Your Smart ID card is printed and waiting at the collection point
- Collected: Your Smart ID card has already been collected
- Application Rejected: There is a problem with your application; visit the office for assistance
Do not apply for a duplicate Smart ID if your original application is still being processed. This can cause administrative complications and delays.
What to Do If Your Application Is Taking Too Long
Smart ID cards should be ready within 10 to 15 working days under normal circumstances. If your application has been processing for longer than 20 working days, take action.
Visit the Home Affairs office where you applied, bring your receipt, and ask a supervisor to investigate. You can also email the Home Affairs enquiries address at contact.centre@dha.gov.za.
