How to Check Your RDP Housing Application Status
After submitting your RDP housing application, you can check its status through your local municipality, the provincial Department of Human Settlements, or the national Housing Subsidy System (HSS). This guide explains the different methods and what the various status outcomes mean.
Method 1: Contact Your Local Municipality
The simplest way to check your status is to call or visit the housing department at the municipality where you applied. Have your ID number and application reference number ready.
- Visit the housing office in person — bring your ID and reference number
- Call the municipal housing department during office hours
- Ask to speak to the housing officer who captured your application
- Request a written confirmation of your application status
Method 2: Contact the Provincial Department of Human Settlements
If you cannot get a response from your municipality, escalate to the provincial Department of Human Settlements. Each province has a dedicated housing helpline.

Method 3: National Housing Subsidy System (HSS)
The Department of Human Settlements maintains a national database. You can submit a query via the DHS website at www.dhs.gov.za or call the national housing helpline on 0800 146 873 (toll-free).
What Your Application Status Means
| Status | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Pending / In Queue | Application received and on the waiting list — no house allocated yet |
| Approved / Eligible | Application verified and approved, awaiting a project in your area |
| Allocated | A house in a specific project has been earmarked for you — await notification |
| Occupied / Registered | House has been transferred to your name at the Deeds Office |
| Disqualified | Application rejected — contact the office for the specific reason |
| Duplicate | Another application exists in your name — investigation required |
Tips for a Successful Enquiry
- Always quote your South African ID number — it is the primary identifier on the HSS
- Have your original application reference number if available
- Visit in person if phone enquiries are unproductive
- Ask the official to print or email your HSS record
- If told your application does not exist, ask for a supervisor — capture errors do occur
