How to Use Past Papers Effectively

Simply reading a past paper does little to improve your results. The most effective use of past papers involves practising under exam conditions, then carefully reviewing your answers against the memorandum.

  • Set a timer for the exact exam duration (usually 2.5 or 3 hours) and work in silence.
  • Do not look at notes or textbooks during the timed practice — replicate real exam conditions.
  • After the time is up, mark your own work using the memorandum.
  • For each wrong answer, read the memorandum explanation and identify whether your error was conceptual, a calculation mistake, or a misreading of the question.
  • Keep a log of recurring errors so you can target those topics in revision.
  • Work through at least 5 years of past papers for each subject before the exam.

Understanding the Memorandum

The marking memorandum shows the model answers examiners use to award marks. For essay and data response questions, it includes the key points that must be present and the mark allocation for each point.

For Mathematics and Physical Sciences, the memo shows each step of working — you can earn method marks even if your final answer is wrong. Always show your working clearly.

For languages, the memo provides guidelines for assessing comprehension, language use, and writing quality. Use it to check that your answers address the specific question asked.
