NSC Life Orientation — Assessment Guide

Life Orientation (LO) is a compulsory NSC subject, but it differs significantly from other subjects in how it is assessed. Unlike Mathematics or Physical Sciences, Life Orientation does not have a traditional written examination paper. Instead, it is assessed entirely through School-Based Assessment (SBA), which accounts for 100% of your final Life Orientation mark. Understanding how SBA works is essential for every Grade 12 learner.

How Is Life Orientation Assessed?

Life Orientation is assessed entirely through School-Based Assessment (SBA). There is no final written examination for LO. Your SBA mark (out of 100) is recorded and submitted by your school to the DBE.

LO counts as half a subject in the NSC — it contributes 50 marks to your total of 600 NSC marks (where other full subjects contribute 100 marks each). Despite being worth less than other subjects, a low LO mark can still affect whether you achieve a Bachelor's, Diploma, or Higher Certificate pass.

Life Orientation SBA Tasks

The SBA for Grade 12 Life Orientation includes a range of tasks set by your teacher and the DBE. Common tasks include:

  • Research assignments on topics such as human rights, democracy, careers, and health.
  • Physical Education (PE) component — participation in sport or physical activity and a task demonstrating physical fitness.
  • A community service project or social responsibility task.
  • A career portfolio or study skills project.
  • Presentations, debates, or group activities on social issues.
  • Tests on LO content (social and environmental responsibility, personal wellbeing, citizenship).

  • Keep a portfolio of all your LO work throughout the year in case of any disputes.
  • If your school uses standardised tasks from the DBE, ensure you understand the rubric before starting each task.
