NSC IsiZulu Past Papers — Home Language and First Additional Language

IsiZulu is South Africa's most widely spoken language and is studied by a large proportion of NSC learners, either as Home Language or First Additional Language. Both levels follow the same three-paper format: Paper 1 (reading comprehension and language), Paper 2 (literature), and Paper 3 (writing). This guide explains each paper and provides guidance for preparing using past papers.

Paper 1 — Ukufunda noKuqonda (Reading and Comprehension)

Paper 1 tests your ability to read IsiZulu texts and answer questions demonstrating both literal and interpretive understanding. It also includes language questions testing grammar, vocabulary, and stylistic devices in IsiZulu.

  • Comprehension: read questions before the passage to know what to look for.
  • Quote from the text to support answers — avoid paraphrasing when exact words are required.
  • Summary writing: identify the key points and write them in your own IsiZulu.
  • Language: revise isichasiso (adjective), ibizo (noun), isenzo (verb) classifications.
  • Figures of speech: inkathazomqondo (metaphor), ukufanisa (simile), ukwenza izinto zikhulume (personification) — know them all.

Paper 2 — Imibhalo Yobuciko (Literature)

Paper 2 covers prescribed literary texts. You will study a novel (inoveli), drama (umdlalo), poems (izinkondlo), and short stories (izindaba ezifishane). The specific prescribed works are set annually by the DBE.

  • Read each prescribed text at least twice before the exam.
  • For poetry: analyse theme, imagery, tone, and structure.
  • For drama and novels: know plot, characters, conflict, and isifundo (moral/theme).
  • Contextual questions are based on extracts — read the extract carefully in the exam.
  • Essay questions require an argument with textual evidence.

Paper 3 — Ukubhala (Writing)

Paper 3 tests creative and transactional writing in IsiZulu. You will choose from options in each section. Marks are awarded for content, language accuracy, structure, and format.

Creative writing tasks may include: izindaba (story), inkulumo (speech), isimemo (invitation), incwadi (letter). Transactional tasks include formal and informal register writing.
