How to Update Your Banking Details with SASSA
If you want your SASSA grant paid directly into your bank account instead of a SASSA card, or if you have changed banks, you need to update your banking details with SASSA. This guide explains the process, the documents required, and important warnings about fraud when changing bank details.
Why Update Your Banking Details?
SASSA can pay your grant directly into a South African bank account of your choice. This is often more convenient than using a SASSA Postbank card, as you can access your funds at any ATM or use internet banking.
You must update your banking details if: you have opened a new bank account, you have closed your old account, your bank has changed, or you want to switch from a SASSA card to a bank account payment.
You must visit the SASSA office in person. Banking detail changes cannot be done by a third party on your behalf due to fraud prevention measures. Bring your original ID and bank documents.
SASSA will never call you and ask for your banking details over the phone. If you receive such a call, it is a scam. Hang up and report it to 0800 60 10 11.
How to Update Banking Details at a SASSA Office
- Gather the required documents (listed below).
- Visit your nearest SASSA office in person. Banking detail changes must be done in person by the grant beneficiary.
- Tell the SASSA official you want to update your banking details.
- Complete the banking detail change form.
- Submit your original documents for verification.
- You will receive a confirmation slip. The change usually takes effect from the next payment cycle.
Documents Required
- Your original South African ID document (smart card or green barcoded ID book).
- Your original SASSA card or grant letter.
- A recent original bank statement (not older than 3 months) OR a stamped letter from your bank confirming your account name, account number, account type, and branch code.
- Proof of residence (utility bill, lease agreement, or affidavit) not older than 3 months.
Capitec and TymeBank are popular choices for SASSA beneficiaries because they have low or no monthly fees and no minimum balance requirements.
Accepted Banks for SASSA Payments
SASSA can pay grants into most South African registered bank accounts. Commonly accepted banks include:
- Postbank (formerly South African Post Office banking)
- Absa
- Standard Bank
- FNB (First National Bank)
- Nedbank
- Capitec Bank
- African Bank
- TymeBank
Do not close your old bank account or cancel your SASSA card before SASSA confirms the banking detail change has been processed. If the change has not gone through and your old account is closed, you may miss a payment.
How Long Does the Change Take?
Banking detail changes submitted before the 15th of the month usually take effect from the 1st of the following month. Changes submitted after the 15th may only take effect the month after that.
You will continue to receive your grant through your old payment method until the change is confirmed. Do not close your old account until SASSA has confirmed the switch.
