SASSA Card Problems: Lost Card, Expired Card and PIN Reset Guide

Your SASSA Postbank Gold Card is used to receive and withdraw your social grant payment. Problems with the card such as losing it, forgetting your PIN, or the card expiring can prevent you from accessing your money. This guide explains what to do in each situation and how to resolve the issue quickly.

If your card is lost or stolen, call 0800 60 10 11 or 0800 53 54 55 immediately to block it. This prevents someone else from withdrawing your money.

Report a lost or stolen SASSA card as soon as possible. Once someone withdraws funds using your card, it is very difficult to recover that money. SASSA will not automatically replace stolen funds.

What to Do If Your SASSA Card Is Lost or Stolen

  1. Report the loss immediately by calling the SASSA/Postbank helpline on 0800 60 10 11 or the Postbank card hotline on 0800 53 54 55. Ask them to block the card to prevent unauthorised withdrawals.
  2. Visit your nearest SASSA office with your South African ID document.
  3. Complete a card replacement request form.
  4. A replacement card will be issued. In most cases you will receive the new card at the SASSA office within a few days, or it will be mailed to you.
  5. Once you receive the new card, set a new PIN at any Postbank ATM or SASSA pay point.

What to Do If Your SASSA Card Has Expired

SASSA Postbank Gold Cards have an expiry date printed on the front. When your card expires, you will not be able to withdraw funds until you get a replacement.

SASSA should automatically send you a new card before your current one expires, but this does not always happen. If your card has expired or is about to expire, take action before the expiry date.

  1. Check the expiry date on the front of your SASSA card.
  2. At least one month before expiry, visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID to request a replacement.
  3. If your card has already expired, visit SASSA with your ID as soon as possible.
  4. You will be issued a temporary voucher or the replacement card will be arranged.
  5. Once the new card arrives, activate it and set your PIN.

To reset your PIN at an ATM: Insert your card, select "Forgot PIN" or "PIN Change", verify with your ID number, and follow the prompts to set a new 5-digit PIN.

How to Reset a Forgotten or Blocked PIN

If you enter the wrong PIN three times at an ATM, your card will be blocked. You can reset your PIN in the following ways:

  1. Visit any Postbank ATM and select the PIN change option. You will need your ID number to verify your identity.
  2. Visit a SASSA pay point on a payment day with your ID. SASSA officials can assist with PIN resets.
  3. Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID and request a PIN reset.
  4. Call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 for assistance with a PIN reset.

SASSA grants are only paid once a month. If you cannot access your money and the problem is on SASSA's side, report it before the end of the month so it can be resolved for the next payment cycle.

SASSA Card Not Working at ATM

  • Check that your card is not expired (see expiry date on the front).
  • Make sure you are using the correct PIN. Remember it is a 5-digit PIN for the SASSA Postbank card.
  • Try a different ATM or a Postbank ATM specifically.
  • Check if the ATM is down by trying a SASSA pay point instead.
  • If the card is damaged or the chip is not reading, visit a SASSA office for a replacement.
  • Call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 to check if the card has been blocked or if there is a technical issue.

SASSA Pay Points as an Alternative

If you are having ATM problems, SASSA pay points are an alternative way to collect your grant. Pay points are located at community halls, shopping centres, and other venues. The dates are published monthly.

Check the SASSA website at www.sassa.gov.za or call 0800 60 10 11 for pay point locations and dates in your area.
